ReadWorks (Internet Tool 3)

ReadWorks is a free online reading comprehension tool that uses cognitive and science-based research and standards-aligned content to create engaging resources to enhance skills taught in the classroom. The website includes different types of texts and assessments that are easy for teachers and students to access at school and at home.

ReadWorks Site Tour

There are thousands of fiction and non-fiction reading passages, articles, and ebooks that are topically-aligned to help provide background knowledge for other subjects and could be filtered by passage type, grade level, and topic.

Reading passages come with vocabulary lists, definitions, examples, activities, and question sets. Passages for kindergarten and 1st grade are written at listening comprehension level, with an audio option. The Scope & Sequence tab pairs passages with decodable texts about the same topic for beginning readers to help build vocabulary and retain information. These paired texts come with explicit and inferential questions about both passages as well as culminating questions to connect the two. Non-fiction Decodable Texts are aligned with the Article-A-Day sets to help in phonics instruction for kindergarten and 1st grade. Article-A-Day is a 10-minute daily routine to help increase background knowledge, reading stamina, and vocabulary for kindergarten to eighth graders. StepReads provides a simpler version of passages while keeping the integrity of the original passage.

As a first grade teacher, I would like to shine extra light on this list of concepts that are covered by ReadWorks decodable texts:

CVC words
Consonant digraphs
Bonus letters/double final consonants
Glued sounds/welded sounds
Suffix 's'
Blends: Initial consonant, final consonant, digraph
Suffixes ‘ing’ and ‘ed’
R-Controlled vowels
Open syllables
Vowel teams
VCe words
Multisyllabic words

After going through the simple process of creating a class, teachers could easily assign passages, vocabulary lists, and questions to individual students or the whole class. Students access assignments by using a link or class code directly through the ReadWorks website or other methods such as Google Classroom. Students are able to change text size, view in split-screen, highlight, and annotate. ReadWorks tracks progress and collects student data and uses smart features to ensure that students are reading passages that push them to progress.

As a new feature, the Student Library allows students to have access to reading passages below grade level, at grade level, and two grades above. This is for pleasure reading or extra practice because there are no assessments or questions. All other ReadWorks content is only accessible to students if they are assigned by their teacher. Teachers have access to data on books students read so that they are aware of interests that could help guide instructions.
