Quizlet (Internet Tool 2)

Quizlet is a study tool that was created to make studying less stressful, more enjoyable, and more effective. It was created in 2005 and is now used by 60 million people every month. There are currently seven different study modes available and there are plans in motion to make learning more personalized for each student by providing an assistant.

This tool uses learning science principles such as repetition, spaced-learning, and retrieval practice. Repetition and retrieval are done through using the same information in different games and activities. Spaced-learning is made possible by data provided to help you plan your study sessions so that there is an increase in retention of information being studied.

What is Quizlet?

I’m sure most, if not all, of you reading this blog have tried creating flashcards for studying. I still have my students create their own flashcards to practice addition, subtraction, and sight word fluency when they have extra time. Teachers and students are able to create flashcards or choose to use one that is already created. Flashcards could be reviewed for a self-paced, no pressure, study session. The paid versions of Quizlet have the additional feature of adding audio, images, photos, diagrams, and rich text formatting on flashcards. But, the free version still allows access to flashcards that are already created with those features.

To make study sessions more interesting, the Learn mode has practice activities using the flashcards. Students create a learning goal for themselves at the beginning of each study session. The questions in Learn mode get progressively more challenging with the option to put more focus on questions answered incorrectly.

The Match tab also provides an opportunity for students to try to beat their own time, or challenge others in who could complete the activity the fastest.

Quizlet Plus Features

The Test tab is an opportunity for students to practice test-taking strategies and to check how prepared they are for their final assessment. Tests could be created so that it is similar to the final assessment and could be timed to provide a more realistic setting. Auto-grading provides feedback on what you need to study more.

Teachers have the Classic-Live and Checkpoint options to use as in-class activities. It is another competitive game option that also provides feedback and collects data. Classic-Live allows teachers to create custom teams and to switch terms and definitions during games. Students are able to join games using a provided link or QR code.

Additional features for teachers to personalize study sessions for each student are also made available in Quizlet Plus.

Quizlet also has additional features that are not directly related to the main studying tool feature. The Be the Change feature is a library of information for educators that focuses on current and past social issues. This feature also includes lesson plans on social justice issues.

There is an app for that!!!. The Quizlet app syncs with the website, so your data is accessible on all devices. It also allows you to study offline. Quizlet also has a YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/@quizlet/videos) with webinars, tutorials, and other videos about Quizlet.
